Indigenous Studies program is housed in the Department of Sociology
and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences (SISS), at San Jose State
University. SISS is part of the College of Social Sciences and is
committed to equitable and inclusive teaching and learning. The
College sees faculty and student success as inextricably linked and
strives to provide culturally sustaining and academically affirming
approaches to supporting and engaging students and faculty.The
temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are
filled as needed based on student enrollment and funding.
Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching at short
notice. The Fall term begins in late August and ends in
mid-December; the Spring term begins in mid-January and ends in
mid-May.Brief Description of DutiesThe Sociology and
Interdisciplinary Social Sciences Department (SISS) at San Jose
State University invites highly qualified and motivated applicants
for a pool of part-time teaching appointments. SISS invites
applications from candidates who can demonstrate excellence in
teaching and working with faculty, staff, and students from diverse
backgrounds.
- Teach the NAIS curriculum (lower and upper division 3-unit
courses) as needed and serve weekly office hours based on assigned
teaching unit load.
- The department is particularly interested in candidates with
expertise in more than one academic field and educational and
background experience in inter/trans-disciplinary and decolonial
pedagogies.
- Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a student
population of great diversityincluding age, abilities, cultural
background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary
language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic
preparationthrough inclusive course materials, teaching strategies,
and advisement.
- Faculty shall organize all their classes within the Canvas
Learning Management System (LMS).
- All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout
the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the
schedule of classes (i.e., asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous,
in-person, or hybrid). Required Qualifications
- M.A. required in one or more areas of Native American and
Indigenous Studies, including but not limited to the following:
environmental studies, sovereignty, Indigeneity, gender and
sexuality, literature, culture and language reclamation, and
revitalization.
- Two or more years of teaching experience.
- Preference will be given to candidates with prior teaching
experience at the college or university level who can provide
evidence of excellence in teaching.
- Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity
to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might
have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and
other comparable experience. Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. degree in the field relevant to the curriculum or related
