Position description
Specialist in Cryo-EM Structural Biology
The Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND) at the
University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking an
outstanding and motivated individual to join our cutting-edge
research institute aimed at discovering new therapies for
neurodegenerative diseases. The successful incumbent will
contribute and help manage our cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM)
structural biology program focused on deciphering the structural
basis for neurodegenerative diseases, including, Alzheimer's
disease (AD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), multiple system
atrophy (MSA) and Parkinson's disease (PD). This position is a part
of the Institutes broad focus on developing a highly skilled and
multidisciplinary team to discover the causes of disease, and
develop effective pharmacologic treatments, cures and diagnostic
markers for these diseases. The IND cryo-EM facility is state of
the art and includes a Titan Krios, Glacios, and L120C transmission
EM instruments. Additional advanced instruments including a Krios
G4 and plasma FIB-SEM have recently been purchased as a part of
plans to develop an additional 3,000 sq. ft. facility in 2022. The
IND is directed by Nobel Laureate Dr. Stanley Prusiner and located
at the Sandler Neurosciences Center at UCSF's Mission Bay campus, a
world-renowned hub of biomedical research and discovery.
The successful applicant will be an experienced structural biology
researcher with expertise in cryo-EM research and in the operation
and support of an electron microscope facility, including personnel
training, data collection and processing. They will be responsible
for developing and applying these methods and skills to support the
operation of the IND cryo-EM facility and ongoing research efforts.
This will additionally include collaboration and research with
faculty and research teams on groundbreaking projects. Thus, the
incumbent will be a skilled communicator with interests in working
as a team with members across disciplines at the IND to advance
cryo-EM research efforts to understand the structural basis of
neurodegenerative disease-relevant protein macromolecules.

* Two-years minimum postdoctoral experience in cryo-electron
microscopy.
Technical Qualifications
Required:
* 2+ years of experience in cryo-EM including sample preparation,
microscope operation, data collection, computational analysis, and
3D structure determination of protein macromolecules.
* Demonstrated experience in user training and support for the
operation of high-resolution cryo-EM instruments.
Preferred:
* Expertise in cryo-EM computational software including RELION,
cryoSPARC and/or cisTEM.
* Biochemistry expertise including protein purification and
analysis by in vitro methods.
