Senior Mediator

Job Description:



Supervises the Mediator class by assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work for productivity, quality, and consistency;
Assists and participates in the performance review and progressive disciplinary process of Mediators and subordinate staff under the direction of the Director of Family Court Services;
Participates in employee selection and provides direction, mentoring, and training in professional, administrative, and technical procedures;
Coordinates staff development;
Consults with subordinate staff regarding research and case analysis including difficult and/or complex matters;
Prepares special studies, reports, and correspondence;
Monitors compliance with relevant policies and procedures of the Division;
Assists and makes recommendations in the development and revision of Family Court Services policies and procedures, rules, and forms;
Develops, administers, and manages projects, grants, and programs as assigned by the Director of Family Court Services;
Conducts in-service training programs for Family Court Services and community agencies;
Reviews and responds to complaints by the public, attorneys, and Judicial Officers about Court Mediators under his/her supervision;
Reviews pertinent legislation, research, and legal findings related to Family Court matters and updates Family Court Services staff of relevant issues;
Conducts special investigations of individuals and organizations on complex issues related to pending matters;
Reviews and approves summaries of interview and investigation results, findings, and recommendations;
Performs other duties as assigned.


Master's degree in psychology, social work, or marriage and child counseling, or other behavioral science substantially related to marriage and family interpersonal relationships;
California State License as a psychotherapist;
At least two years of experience in counseling or psychotherapy, or both, preferably in a setting related to the areas of responsibility of the family conciliation court which directly demonstrates the possession and application of the knowledge and abilities required for this position.
Bilingual Spanish or Vietnamese speaking ability is highly desirable.
Submission to a background investigation upon offer of employment is required.

Knowledge of:

Duties and responsibilities of managing assigned staff;
Adult psychopathology, family systems theory, crisis intervention techniques, child development, child abuse, and clinical issues relating to children;
The effects of domestic violence and parental chemical dependency on children and child custody research sufficient to enable the counselor to assess the mental health needs of children;
Diagnostic skill and familiarity with both normal and dysfunctional interaction patterns; community resources for the client referral; and the California Court System and procedures used in Family Law cases;
Statutes, rules, and regulations that govern the mediation process and Family Court Services;
Principles and practices of supervision and management.

Ability to:

Sensitively confront and actively explore alternative solutions with subordinate staff and clients within a time-limited framework;
Relate to, and gain the confidence of adults under stressful conditions;
Be skilled in conflict resolution, problem solving, and interviewing and assessing clients from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds;
Prepare clear, concise reports and make supporting recommendations; and effectively communicate orally and in writing;
Interact effectively and professionally in high stress situations;
Organize and coordinate multiple projects and meet deadlines;
Maintain effective working relationships with staff, administration, Judicial Officers, and the public.
