How will you make an impact?

The Research and Development group of the Life Sciences and Mass Spectrometry business unit is offering a unique opportunity for highly talented individuals looking to gain experience and play a role in the design and development of technology critical to supporting Thermo Fisher's position as the leader in mass spectrometry.

Participants will take part in the Visiting Scientist Program where they will contribute to needs-based projects while receiving exposure to the company's core businesses, processes, technologies, and leaders. The Program is a one-year assignment with the ability for a second-year extension. This is a premier opportunity to make a significant contribution to the World Leader in Serving Science.

What will you do?

* Conduct leading-edge research and development in the field of LCMS instrumentation, which includes the areas of atmospheric pressure ionization sources, ion optics, mass analyzer development, and ion mobility. * Investigate and explore new ideas and concepts by defining experiments, building, debugging, and characterizing prototype hardware/software in order to verify proof of principle data. * Work with mechanical and electrical engineers to design prototypes and new products * Collaborate closely with project team members and other cross-functional groups in the organization including marketing, applications, and business development * Submit and present project updates and reports * Write invention disclosures and possible patent applications * Manage and prioritize daily assignments to ensure timely completion * Attend and participate in scheduled planning meetings and/or status meetings * Manage and maintain required reagents, laboratory environment, and equipment needed to carry out assignments * Other opportunities may include possible contributions to scientific literature and presentations at conferences. * Demonstrate Thermo Fisher Scientific values - Integrity, Intensity, Innovation and Involvement.

How will you get here?


Master's degree in chemistry, biology, engineering, computer programming, or related field


* 1-4 years of R&D laboratory experience * Experience in developing Hardware and Software for analytical instruments such as the design of API sources, Ion optics systems, ion mobility or mass analyzers * Experience in developing ion mobility devices for large molecules analysis will be an advantage * Hands on experience in operating and maintaining Thermo Fisher Scientific LC and Orbitrap mass analyzer will be a plus but not necessary

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

* Knowledge of mass spectrometer theory and components required (such as electromagnetic fields, ionization sources, mass analyzers, RF systems, electrometers, and charged particle detectors) * High level of technology fluency to understand and properly communicate the technology associated with assigned products * Strong instrumentation design and troubleshooting ability * Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks with different priorities * Ability to make independent decisions and possess strong initiative * Ability to dissect problems with strong analytical and critical thinking skills * Ability to accurately plan, define, and manage project tasks * Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills * Capable of working with multi-disciplinary teams

Preferred Qualifications

* Ph.D. or Post-Doctoral Scientist * Experience in the development of instrumentation for bio-analysis with mass spectrometry * Familiarity with C, C++, LUA or Python programming * Working knowledge of SIMION or CPO * Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics software
