College Counselor, Alpha College Success Team

As a College Counselor at Alpha, you play an integral role in student collegiate success. We are focused on ensuring that 75% of Alpha students graduate from a 4-year college within 6 years of graduating from Alpha, and to do that, our counselors support kids to apply to a wide range of colleges, complete financial aid, and choose the college where the student is most likely to be successful.

What you'll do

  • Advise seniors on college and career pathways though Senior College Seminar (70% of time):
  • Teach either (a) fall semester of senior college prep and spring semester of junior college prep, or (b) two semesters of senior college prep
  • Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials for senior college prep
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior for a productive learning environment during class sessions
  • Ensure that seniors complete all financial aid forms including FAFSA, CSS Profile, and scholarships, and identify and support students through EOP
  • Advocate for students in the financial aid process
  • Advise students around creation of college lists and best fit and match options to maximize student acceptances at colleges that are a good fit for their interests and academic profile
  • Support students through the application process including but not limited to the CSU, UC and Common Application systems
  • Print transcripts as necessary and send final senior transcripts to colleges/universities
  • Once students receive acceptance letters, help students select colleges where they have the highest chance of graduating from a 4-year college within 6 years
  • Ensure that students complete SIR for colleges by May 1, and create summer plans to accept financial aid and register for orientation
  • Participate in regular data collection and analysis to ensure students' progress toward completion of FAFSA, college applications, and college selection
  • Prepare families to be college-ready along with their students by hosting family events and supporting school interactions with parents (15% of time):
  • Host several family events throughout the school year to build a strong financially literate and college going culture and the college preparation process (a-g requirements, college application process, etc)
  • Serve as a resource to parents on college planning, including admission standards, entrance exams, course selection, financial aid and scholarships
  • Create and deliver PD for Advisors around college preparation to help them lead family conferences aligned to college readiness requirements and geared toward maximizing 4-year college choices
  • Support a college-going culture at the school by (5% of time):
  • Auditing student transcripts to ensure that they are on track with A-G courses and identifying students who need summer school
  • Suggesting and planning college readiness interventions and events for students across grade levels
  • Creating a visual college presence
  • Consult with the school team on course scope and sequence at CAHS aligned to college, scheduling, and test coordination (10% of time).

You possess

  • A Bachelor's degree
  • Experience as a high school teacher or college counselor
  • College Readiness subject matter expertise and strong classroom management skills
