Description Job Summary:
The Senior Manager/Director, Systems Engineering works in our
San Jose, CA engineering facility and is responsible for managing
the formulation of technical requirements and design decisions of
new products in our revolutionary optical sequencing technology.
The person in this role will lead the team that has primary
accountability for the development of complex life science
instruments and for the characterization of embedded systems that
leads to verification and validation. The position requires
experience managing diverse teams, solid technical background in
engineering and technology and direct experience with successful
NGS products. Good problem solving abilities, hands-on design and
lab skills, creativity and collaboration are essential.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Expand and manage a Systems Engineering team to guide overall
Team members will be expected to have strong instrument/platform
development backgrounds, capable of troubleshooting complex
systems, identifying opportunities for quality improvements,
provide root cause analyses, and communicate results and plans to
the rest of the Engineering team.
Ensure that comprehensive System Requirements documents are
formulated and that designs are compatible with technical goals and
Interacts with other senior functional leaders to ensure that
the systems under development meet overall business requirements in
a timely manner
Plan and execute hardware/software integration testing,
performance characterization, requirements analysis, and risk
Plan and execute automated chemistry testing protocols, analyze
and interpret results, and communicate results through written
reports and design reviews.
Actively participate in project planning. Troubleshoot, and
Coordinate meetings and activities as needed to ensure project
Perform other work related duties as assigned.
Minimum of a MS in Bioengineering, ME, physics, optics, or
related academic or professional training.
Minimum of 5 years' experience in leading R&D teams in a
commercial instrumentation setting, and 7 years’ experience
developing NGS products preferred.
Knowledge and experience with basic NGS technology.
Expertise and hands-on experience with prototyping tools.
Prior management responsibility for diverse technical teams
Previous experience in product development of complex, precision
biomedical instruments from concept through production.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
PhD. in Bioengineering, Engineering, Physics, or other relevant
Hands-on experience with building NGS systems, optical
alignment, building test setup and performing mechanical tolerance
Willing to travel up to ~20% time.
