Job Description:
The Therapy Department at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is
recruiting (3) full-time Speech-Language Pathologist Positions. The
Speech-Language Pathologist I position can be alternatively staffed
with a Speech Language Pathologist II position.
Per Diem Speech-Language Pathologist positions are also available
for experienced hospital-based Speech-Language Pathologists.
SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST I $107,463.20 - $130,020.80

Description
The Speech-Language Pathologist I, under supervision, evaluates the
therapy needs and designs appropriate treatment plans and goals to
meet the needs the needs of patients based on their service area.
The Speech-Language Pathologist I perform relatively routine
patient care for all age groups served. All services are provided
in an inpatient and outpatient hospital setting.
Typical Tasks
Patient Care
- Performs relatively routine patient care with fundamental
skills in clinical reasoning and problem solving;
- Completes adequate intake of the patient's history, current
medical diagnosis patient's prior level of functioning, and
patient's goals;
- Completes effective differential diagnosis of speech, language,
cognitive and swallowing disabilities;
- Interprets diagnostic findings of speech, language, cognitive,
and swallowing disabilities;
- Explains remediation procedures to other professionals and
non-professional staff;
- Determines patient's general prognosis and patient's
anticipated length of stay on a particular service;
- Develops appropriate treatment plans that include specific
treatment methods, duration and frequency of treatment, and
goals;
- Alleviates impairment and functional limitation by designing,
implementing and modifying therapeutic interventions appropriate to
patient's diagnosis, impairments and prognosis;
- Adapts treatment plans based on continuous assessment, progress
made and patient goals;
- Maintains communication with supervisor regarding current
caseload;
- Performs indirect patient care duties such as communication and
coordination of care with the patient, family, caregivers, and
other professionals, conference reporting, documentation, and
charging according to procedures;
- Completes patient/family/caregiver education and training;
- Performs tasks listed above for an assigned caseload of
patients.Clinical Supervisory Responsibilities
- Provides clinical guidance to speech-language therapy student
interns.Administrative Responsibilities
- May assist with orientation and training of new service
personnel as needed;
- Prioritizes and schedules patient treatment as assigned;
- Assumes selected responsibilities of other staff during
temporary absences;
- May assist in the day to day operations of assigned
service.Professional and Program Development
- Maintains appropriate amount of required continuing education
units;
- Participates in internal and external professional and
educational activities to enhance personal and professional
growth;
- Participates in hospital research as appropriate;
- May assist with program development as assigned;
- Keeps current on new treatment techniques.Employment Standards
A valid license, or eligibility for licensing, to practice as a
Speech-Language Pathologist from the Speech-Language Pathology and
Audiology Board of California AND a Certificate of Clinical
Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from the American
Speech-Language-Hearing Association; AND a minimum of nine months
of required professional experience as a clinical fellow in
Speech-Language Pathology. Must pass the next scheduled examination
or be released from position.
Sufficient education, knowledge and experience to demonstrate the
possession and application of the knowledge and abilities listed
below.
Knowledge of:
- Principles, methods, theory and practices of Speech-Language
Pathology;
- Pathologies and injuries which result in speech, language,
cognitive, and swallowing disabilities;
- Legal issues affecting the practice of Speech-Language
pathology;
- Code of Ethics and performance standards as outlined by the
American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.Ability to:
- Write clearly and concisely;
- Advocate for and represent Speech Pathology within the hospital
and within the community;
- Develop and maintain productive relationships with patients,
families and colleagues;
- Foster unity within the Therapy Services Department;
- Efficiently manage time and priorities;
- Demonstrate appropriate patient handling skills;
- Reach, grasp, manipulate and carry a variety of objects.
SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST II
$124,196.80 - $150,273.76 Annually
Description
Under general supervision and using clinical expertise, evaluates
the speech and language needs of inpatients and outpatients in a
hospital setting. Develops, implements, and documents treatment
plans and goals designed to meet patient needs and acts as a
clinical resource specialist to other therapists.
Typical Tasks
Patient Care
- Performs complex evaluation and treatment with advanced skills
in clinical reasoning, problem solving and treatment
interventions;
- Completes intake of the patient's history, current medical
diagnosis, patient's prior level of functioning, and patient's
goals;
- Interprets and analyzes findings of speech, language,
cognitive, and swallowing disabilities to determine therapy
diagnosis and prognosis;
- Develops appropriate treatment plans that include specific
treatment methods, duration and frequency of treatment, and
goals;
- Designs, implements and modifies therapeutic interventions to
alleviate impairment and functional limitation that are appropriate
to patient's diagnosis, age, impairments and prognosis;
- Explains remediation procedures to other professionals and
non-professionals;
- Adapts treatment plans based on continuous assessment, progress
made, and patient goals;
- Performs indirect patient care duties such as communication and
coordination of care with the patient, family, caregivers, and
other professionals, conference reporting, documentation, and
charging according to procedures;
- Conducts patient/family/caregiver education and training;
- Manages assigned caseload of patients, which includes
scheduling and prioritizing patient care, and responsibility for
patient care delegated to Clinical Fellows and Therapy
Technicians;
- Makes recommendations, including home programs and referrals to
others as needed;
- Maintains communication with supervisor regarding current
caseload;
- Serves as a consultant in an area of clinical specialty to
staff therapists;
- May act as a clinical liaison in specialty clinics.Clinical
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervises Clinical Fellows, Therapy Technicians, students and
volunteers as assigned, and conducts clinical competencies of
same;
- Provides clinical guidance to other Speech-Language
Pathologists in areas of expertise;
- Assists Speech-Language Pathologist IIIs with training of staff
therapists, assistants (PT and OT) and students;
- Leads other therapists working on special projects or who are
assigned to satellite facilities;
- Provides orientation and training of new service
personnel.Administrative Responsibilities

Experience Note The knowledge and abilities are typically acquired
