We strongly encourage people of color, people with disabilities, women, and LGBTQ candidates to apply.Purpose of Position:Joining a seven-person development team, the Director of Development will play a leadership role in the Roosevelt Institute's fundraising strategy by overseeing the foundations revenue stream. Responsibilities include grant writing and stewardship management for a portfolio of foundation donors; collaborating with the team on logistics, communications, and donor cultivation/stewardship; conducting research and analysis on grants, donors, and prospects; partnering with program teams on new program development and strategy; and other related activities. The Director of Development will report directly to the Vice President of Development and manage the Director of Foundation Relations and Development Manager. This is a full-time, non-unionized management role.Essential Functions and ResponsibilitiesIn close partnership with the Vice President of Development and with support from the Director of Foundation Relations, the Director of Development will be responsible for overseeing the Roosevelt Institute's fundraising strategy for foundations, which constitutes 80% of the Institute's revenue. The foundations goal for 2022 is $13M. Key responsibilities include:--- - - -Managing the overall foundations pipeline, including advising on strategy, tracking progress toward goals, leveraging data to inform decisions, and directly managing the Director of Foundation Relations and Development Manager.--- - - -Owning a portfolio of foundation relationships, including staffing principals on relationship management and stewardship, directly engaging with program officers and representing the organization externally, and serving as a thought partner to program staff on new program development and fundraising strategies.--- - - -Conducting the full range of activities required to research, write, prepare, and submit grant proposals and reports. This includes: collaborating with executive leadership and program staff to develop, write, edit, and proofread complex grant proposals and reports; ensuring accuracy of all proposal attachments; and developing grant budgets and budget narratives. Work with development and communications teams to craft other donor-facing materials as needed.Experience Requirements--- - - - Minimum of 7-10 years grant writing experience in the nonprofit field with a demonstrated ability to write winning proposals that yield six- to seven-figure grants.--- - - -Experience managing and supporting staff from a diversity of backgrounds and levels.--- - - -Excellent writing and editing skills.--- - - -Proven experience managing, prioritizing, and meeting multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.--- - - -Ability to collect, synthesize, and process information quickly and with accuracy.--- - - -Ability to present complex programmatic strategies and activities in narratives that are approachable for and tailored to specific funder audiences.--- - - -Superior active listening, observation, analytical, and problem recognition and solving skills.--- - - -Understanding of philanthropic environment, best practices in fundraising, and the field in which Roosevelt works.--- - - -Highly organized, with outstanding attention to detail.--- - - -Experience preparing and formatting grant budgets, grant financial reports, and other financial documents required to secure and report on grants. A track record of achieving financial goals is essential.--- - - -Experience using donor databases like Salesforce, Raiser's Edge, etc.
