We are looking for an experienced Data Science and Research Engineering Leader who can help channel the power of this data science and research engineering team to create practical applications that will allow us to both personalize the eBay experience at a user level, and leverage data across eBay to help us target new consumers. We believe data science can be the foundation that will enable world class commerce, mobile commerce growth and the next generation of global shopping. Example applications might include mobile experience customization, or social graph and behavioral analysis and targeting. The Global Product Experience (GPE) organization wants to make it easy for people to buy across borders, even if buyers/sellers don't speak a common language. We are growing our world class Machine Translation team at eBay! We are looking for a highly motivated and creative director for machine translation research who can manage a high-energy and very agile team of research engineers, applied scientists and researchers to directly influence eBay's growth in the international markets. Did you know that eBay is serving hundreds of millions of translations - daily? We are about to break the billon translations per day very soon.

Qualifications:
You would manage a highly experienced and effective team of engineers and data scientists, and enable them to support internal and external use cases where language technology can be applied. You will report to the Senior Director, Human Language Technology, and help the GPE leadership team remove any friction for any global interaction, with a focus on language.
Clearly define the data science and research engineering strategy to maximize global efficiencies with the ability to innovate. Efficiently manage petabytes of data, helping science and engineering to be most beneficial to our users. While keeping the user experience and design a priority, you will innovate, deploy and maintain systems to answer at a level of a few milliseconds. Collaborate with eBay's Search Science to test MT in cross lingual search ideas to improve quality of user experience. Apply NLP techniques that enable a fast paced, large scale, real world commerce platform to expand in international markets. Build, manage, inspire and mentor a team of world class research engineers, applied scientists and researchers . Help develop tools, processes to support and extend machine translation engines by drawing upon the expertise and latest research in NLP, SMT, and Machine Learning. Participate in developing research and development roadmaps that aggressively tests machine translation capabilities in the context of cross border commerce. Rapidly develop prototypes and carry out feasibility studies of MT software/packages and your own ideas. Work with leading universities and research institutes in the area of NLP and MT on novel ideas Participate and interact with other senior applied scientists in the NLP/MT research community to learn, share, and make significant contributions in the application of MT Continuously innovate through frequent product iterations and contribute to business growth Regularly present the status of the research work to GPE leadership and eBay management Work closely with product managers, researchers, linguists to ensure the MT engines are effectively integrated into the necessary platforms and are highly responsive and reliable. Solid understanding of NLP, Machine Translation, Deep Learning, and Machine Learning techniques is highly desired Ability to shift from developing and communicating a strategy to executing in a cross-functional, matrixed organization. Excellent people manager, experienced in developing and growing a team of product managers Ability to consider, articulate details, and execute tasks in various areas of human language technology including development of software and systems that enable generation of parallel corpora, domain adaption, normalization, pre-processing, TM/LM, decoding, WSD, quality measurements, user experience & feedback, cross lingual search experience Have the foresight to develop scalable MT engines that are not overly complex or hard to maintain Excellent problem solving skills to come up with creative solutions in new application contexts Team player with excellent communication and collaboration skills Proven experience in leading a team of senior engineers and data scientists with diverse academic and cultural background Fluency in software development in languages like Java, Pig/Hive, Python Fluency in C/C++, Scala, R, MatLab are highly desired Familiarity with large scale data processing (Hadoop, Map/Reduce) Solid understanding of NLP, Machine Translation, Deep Learning, and Machine Learning techniques is highly desired Excellent understanding of product management lifecycle Deep knowledge and track-record in running and coordinating agile teams (Scrum, Kanban, test-driven development, extreme programming, disciplined agile delivery, ---) Leadership and management experience, leading a team of senior engineers and data scientists Understanding of computer science fundamentals, data structures, and algorithms Understanding of NLP, Machine Translation, Deep Learning, and Machine Learning techniques. Fluency in Java, Pig/Hive, Python, C/C++, Scala, R, and MatLab MS in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering with experience in the related field preferred (Ph.D. preferred)
