Job Description:
The Equipment Development Engineer works within the R&D department to conceive, develop and deploy complex equipment for the manufacture of future generations of solar photovoltaic module products. The position will lead and work with equipment and process engineers to design and build the equipment needed in both the laboratory and high-volume manufacturing lines. Day-to-day activities include mechanical design, mechanical analysis, drafting, procurement, prototyping assembly, and integration of equipment sub-systems into existing or new equipment. Activities also will include daily direction of equipment engineers and interfacing with project management to define design requirements, track progress and collect feedback on the performance of implemented equipment designs
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Interface with process and equipment development team to understand mechanical design requirements for a given project * Perform advanced mechanical and design and analysis of equipment systems and sub-systems * Interface with controls, software, and/or electrical engineers to ensure controlled functionality of actuated electromechanical designs * Create drawing packages & interface with fabrication vendors to build & deliver parts and/or sub-assemblies * Support the assembly of parts & functionality testing against requirements to deliver functionally complete electromechanical systems * Engage and manage equipment suppliers to procure equipment that meets specifications and functional requirements for successful deployment into the lab or manufacturing line * Develop knowledge of SunPower business processes and procedures as required to meet project objectives and timelines * 20% travel required * Comply with the Environment, Health, and Safety, and Manufacturing Quality standards, rules and regulations at all times.

Minimum Education and Experience: * B.S. degree in Engineering and 8+ years of related experience or M.S. Degree and 6+ years or Ph.D. and 4+ years. * Demonstrated proficiency in Solidworks 3D CAD modeling, analysis & drawing packages * Hands-on, practical experience with: * Equipment development * Machining and 3D-printing * Mechanical assembly and integration * Rapid prototyping * Experience with engaging equipment suppliers * Experience working in a team environment

Preferred Experience: * M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or related fields and 10+ years of experience * Superior understanding of Mechanical Engineering fundamental theories and industrial practices of robust equipment design * Direct design experience with: * Roll-to-roll manufacturing equipment * High-volume manufacturing equipment * Integrating specialized materials into prototype designs * High-temperature systems * Precision processing equipment * Demonstrated leadership role within a development team * Proficiency with computer applications such as Microsoft Office applications, Oracle, etc.
