Biosciences San Jose Product Engineering Team, you will be
responsible for the design and support of sophisticated instruments
for medical diagnostics and life science research, involving
technology from every area of science and engineering. You will
specialize on small, precision assemblies and redesign existing
assemblies for improved performance and reliability to provide
costs saving opportunities to the business. We are looking for a
highly motivated Staff Mechanical Engineer, who will provide high
quality and innovative solutions to a wide range of challenging
problems and contribute to the completion of specific design
projects. The ideal candidate is a plastics and additive
manufacturing expert who has experience evaluating current designs
for cost savings opportunities in material selection, manufacturing
process selection, or design. You are a self-starter and want to
implement solutions that are efficient and complete to further
improve the current instrument portfolio. You have a desire and
ability to understand the system and subsystems to acquire a deep
knowledge of the flow cytometry instrument portfolio. As a Staff
Mechanical Engineer on the Product Engineering team you will: Lead
Mechanical Engineering activities and deliverables as a project
manager or as a member of a project team. Scope, plan, and execute
small to medium sized projects. Identify cost saving project
opportunities. Prototype and test designs to ensure they are robust
and manufacturable. Make design decisions and present them
logically to get buy-in from key stakeholders, management, and team
members. Effectively communicate technical concepts/issues, project
status, risks, and mitigations to the executive leadership team.
Provide mentorship and coaching to other engineers within Product
Engineering. Work cross-functionally within and outside of
Operations to complete business critical projects. Conduct root
cause investigation of product and component failures. Perform
electro-mechanical testing of components and sub-systems Test,
collect and analyze data, prepare reports, and present results to
cross functional team. Model opto-mechanical assemblies over a
range of conditions. Model performance across interconnected
subsystems. Design electro-mechanical and fluidic sub-assemblies
using SolidWorks, CREO or other equivalent 3D CAD systems. Provide
support to Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA), End-of-life
(EOL) component selection and cost reduction activities. Understand
market trends and conditions to identify strategic technology
opportunities. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in
Mechanical Engineering, or related field. Minimum of 7 years of
experience as a Mechanical Engineer. Minimum of 4 years of
experience in mold design, mold qualification, or additive
manufacturing Assets: Experience in kinematic principles, modern
opto-mechanical design, and fabrication Experience taking a concept
from feasibility prototype to production Characterize solutions for
mechanical stability, repeatability, and reliability through
structured experiment and test Experience with DFSS and or DOE
methodologies. Experience performing FEA. Experience with
Engineering Change Management procedures such as ECOs, engineering
change impact assessments, and regression testing analysis. Possess
strong lab skills, with ability to perform and document
detail-oriented work with a high degree of accuracy Excellent oral
and written communication skills Previous experience with
biomedical devices is desired. For many roles at BD, employment is
