About The Role

Roku pioneered streaming to the TV and continues to innovate and lead the industry. While we are well-positioned to help shape the future of television and streaming media worldwide, continued success stems from experienced software engineers like you joining the Roku OS Design group.

In this role, you will be part of a team responsible for the system architecture of RokuOS, the embedded operating system for TVs and players across the world. We oversee software designs throughout every aspect of RokuOS. We prototype new ideas, figure out best practices, implement advanced concepts, and evangelize across all of engineering. Our goal is to have the smallest and fastest embedded TV operating system, with the best customer reviews, thats scalable for years of future growth.

We are looking for a very senior software engineer or architect with many years of experience and an interest in driving system architecture forward in RokuOS. You will be solving complex problems and translating your ideas into modular, ultra-reliable software. Your designs and code will directly impact millions of users every day.

What youll be doing

  • Develop and evolve the RokuOS system architecture to support new devices and new features, with appropriate modularity and abstractions
  • Solve design problems in embedded security, application SDKs, networking, graphics, UIs, media and other areas across RokuOS, always with an eye on the resource constraints of our players and TVs
  • Write software that can be easily ported to new or existing platforms
  • Demonstrate excellence in C++ development and deliver high-performance, ultra-reliable software
  • Provide architectural guidance to others across engineering
  • Demonstrate the ability to dig deep to find solutions to challenging problems affecting our users
    Were excited if you have
    • 20+ years in software development, architecture, and API design
    • 10+ years Linux systems programming
    • Excellent C++ programming skills
    • Proven track record of success developing software to operate within tight CPU, RAM, and storage constraints
    • A passion for building robust, portable, and scalable systems
    • Success at Roku is a collaborative effort, so you need to be a strong communicator, describing issues and solutions to various audiences
    • Bachelors and/or Masters degree in Computer Science or equivalent. Ph.D. preferred.
    • In-depth experience with embedded security (DRM, secure boot, secure video path, TEE) is a plus
    • Candidates widely known in the computing industry may be offered a role as a Roku principal engineer (equivalent to a distinguished engineer at many other companies)
      The Roku culture

Roku is a great place for people who want to work in a fast-paced environment where everyone is focused on the companys success rather than their own. We try to surround ourselves with people who are great at their jobs, who are easy to work with, and who keep their egos in check. We appreciate a sense of humor. We believe a fewer number of very talented folks can do more for less cost than a larger number of less talented teams. Were independent thinkers with big ideas who act boldly, move fast and accomplish extraordinary things through collaboration and trust. In short, at Roku youll be part of a company thats changing how the world watches TV.

We have a unique culture that we are proud of. We think of ourselves primarily as problem-solvers, which itself is a two-part idea. We come up with the solution, but the solution isnt real until it is built and delivered to the customer. That penchant for action gives us a pragmatic approach to innovation, one that has served us well since 2002.
