Humanities Department at SJSU is a prominent center for creative,
interdisciplinary study and research. It offers three undergraduate
degree programs: the Liberal Studies Teacher Preparation B.A.; the
Creative Arts B.A.; and the Humanities B.A., in which students
pursue a concentration in American Studies, Liberal Arts, or
Comparative Religious Studies. The Department is also home to two
team-taught, multiple-semester General Education Programs: the
lower-division American Cultures GE sequence and the Humanities
Honors Program, which has both lower and upper-division Humanities
Honors GE course sequences.San Jose State University is a

Description of DutiesTeach a range of courses in the Liberal
Studies Teacher Prep B.A., including the following lower-division
courses: the General Education course, "Chronicles of Education;"
"Visual and Media Arts for K-8 Teachers;" "Performing Arts for K-8
Teachers;" and/or in the series of one-unit "Field study in
Humanities" courses designed to introduce prospective K-8 teachers
to California's public multiple subject classrooms. In addition,
you will hold regular office hours for students, work cooperatively
with other department faculty, staff, and department chair, as well
as participate in required course grading and assessment
activities, etc."Chronicles of Education" uses narratives of
education to teach about the forces that shape individuals and
societies. The course features histories and narratives of
education that represent global, multi-linguistic, gendered and
multi-cultural perspectives about educational practice and
philosophy. The study of poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, and
educational autobiography, as well as visual art and documentary
film, expand traditional views about the sites where education
takes place. Topics covered include the history of US education;
philosophy of education; global influences on US educational
practice; education as colonization; language and the role of
embodiment in learning; and education for social resistance."Visual
and Media Arts for K-8 Teachers" is an introductory and
interdisciplinary course in the Visual Arts and Media Arts designed
for students interested in teaching in K-8 classrooms. Basic
techniques and processes a prospective teacher needs in the Visual
Arts and Media Arts to instruct students. Students actively engage
in the art forms as well as explore standards-based instructional
strategies, classroom management strategies, and aesthetic inquiry.
Introduction to Arts Education research, advocacy, and community
arts resources."Performing Arts for K-8 Teachers" is an
introductory and interdisciplinary course in the Performing Arts
designed for students interested in teaching in the K-8 classroom.
Basic dance, theatre, and music techniques and processes a
prospective teacher needs to create dance/movement, vocal and
instrumental music, creative dramatics and formal theatre with K-8
students. Students actively engage in the three arts disciplines,
as well as explore standards-based instructional strategies,
classroom management strategies, and aesthetic inquiry. Students
are introduced to Performing Arts Education research, advocacy, and
community arts resources.Fieldwork in the Humanities Courses: Each
one-unit course in this fieldwork series requires that student
volunteer in public-school classrooms with credentialed teachers.
The courses include topics such as funds of knowledge, culturally
responsive pedagogy, the physical and procedural classroom,
home-school partnerships, and so on. The courses are designed to
meet the fieldwork requirement to enter a credential program. It is
strongly preferred that instructors of these courses have
experience as the teacher of record in a multiple subject
classroom.Candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience
understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity
- in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and
academic preparation - through inclusive course materials, teaching
strategies and advisement.All Faculty should be organizing their
classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) , the
official LMS provided for the SJSU community. All classes at SJSU,
whether online or not, must be anchored in the Canvas platform to
ensure faculty-student connection in a common space as all students
are directed to log in to Canvas for online access to their
